5 GUYS. CARACAS. ANY MOMOFUKU. All of them restaurants I wish opened a branch of up here on the Upper East Side. Luke's Lobster first heard my pleas a couple of years ago, opening up just three blacks away. And now, finally, The Meatball Shop opened their 5th spot up here on 76th and 2nd Avenue—much to the fervid glee of my fellow Yorkvillians.

A hug fan since my very first visit, I was excited not just by the proximity of this new spot, but that they were also expanding their menu to include brunch.

And how does one favorably feature meatballs in pre-noon weekend repasts? I happily found out as I enjoyed two different iterations this past weekend, both with my choice of meatball.

The first brunch dish I tried was the (meat)balls benedict, choosing spicy pork meatballs to join two perfectly poached eggs over thick toast with thick, crispy bacon—instead of Canadian bacon—and a flavorful, silky hollandaise. The second was an inspired biscuits & gravy dish, with two flaky, airy biscuits, topped with mushroom gravy, and sided with two soft-fried eggs and my choice of chicken meatballs.

Both plates were stellar, evocative in homey culinary tradition and provocative in successfully incorporating homemade tasty, moist, and firm-but-not-dense meatballs into otherwise familiar meals. No surprise, the food was expertly executed.

And now that they're within a leisurely 10-minute walk from my apartment, they should soon find my face—and appetite—familiar as well.
