Plain Nutty About Nutella
GRAMERCY, NYC | When I first heard of a Nutella shop opening up right next to food colosseum EATALY, I thought it would be a thing of pure kitsch and excess. Over a year later, finding myself in the neighborhood on another errand, I decided to finally take a peek in, expecting just large fountains of Nutella that would only seem in place at a foodie's wedding reception.
Instead I found an appropriately realized café, featuring a variety of foods—mostly pastries—and beverages that highlight, or are highlighted by, the dulcet flavor profile of this popular hazelnut/cocoa spread.
The menu is extensive without once being over the top, and creative enough to compel me to order a "Cone-oli", a sugar waffle cone filled with warm Nutella, topped with the latte gelato of my choice (hazelnut) and topped with crushed toasted hazelnuts. Delectably delicious and perfect for the hot August afternoon it was that found me running around the city.
Just a warning: it is Eataly, so expect a bit of crowd madness with avid shoppers, tourists, and curiosity-seekers. But do order something of the Nutella menu and you'll be greatly rewarded for your patience.
