"King" More Like A Jester

WHEN I FIRST SOME FACEBOOK post or ad for the Burger King Bacon Sundae, I, like most of my friends who I immediately relayed this discovery to, thought it was a joke. Maybe something from the Onion. Now, don't get me wrong; my palate is experienced enough to be able to enjoy the addition of savory elements to conventionally sweet dishes.
Even when people knee-jerk react to the very idea of sweet and savory, I quickly remind them of the many foods they already enjoy on a regular basis that are based on the savory/sweet combo, such as barbecue sauce, honey mustard, Cracker Jacks, heck, even going as far back as anyone's first PB&J sandwich, at least before brands like Jif started loading as much sugar into their peanut butter as Welch's was using for their cavity-inducing jellies and jams.
And I want to honestly believe that it the kitchen labs of Burger King headquarters—where they use the freshest of ingredients and the greatest of culinary skill to best impress their focus groups—legitimate chefs created a maybe credible and viable version of a bacon sundae (which is really just their normal sundae of vanilla soft-serve topped with chocolate and caramel sauces, then bacon bits).
That care and attention, however, does not translate to the apathetic teenagers and recently naturalized citizens that that represent my local BK. The sundae itself was passable; what pretty much destroyed the whole endeavor though was the bacn, or what BK is choosing to call bacon. Neither crispy nor chewy, flat strips had the texture of a fruit roll. Then were obviously nuked to (re)heat, their faux maple syrup taste letting me know that this is the same bacon they use for all of their breakfast sandwiches, except for my sundae the strips are hand-torn into randomly-sized slivers that either fight to make it onto the plastic spoon or completely take it over.
This is exactly the kind of culinary injustice that impels me to execute my own version of this dish, to assuage and educate those who doubt this dessert's more successful possibilities. So sometime in the very near future, I will make a sundae of my own, topping it with crispy-fried bacon bits, I will feed it so anyone who remains curious, and they will like—nay, love—it.
No joke...! =)
