ONE OF THE VERY MANY great things about this city is that even when you're to busy or too lazy to cook or go out for food, you can quickly, easily, and usually for no extra charge (young kids, there used to be a delivery charge when regular restaurants started delivering), you can have a jot delicious meal sent to your front door.
And this being Gotham, the delivery options run the gamut of cuisines, even some worth mentioning here on PHUDE! Since I usually categorize these posts into either the Cooking In or Dining Out categories, much of my delivered meals have not been posted here, although I have always had Delivery category as well.
Yet because of this oversight, great meals that I have removed from paper bags on even eaten off of paper plates have not gotten their fair due. One of these great meals is from mamagyro, a small family-operated restaurant whose exquisitely delicious Greek food I enjoy regularly about once or twice a month.
I have still only gotten through half of the menu, but I do have my favorites, even if they are Mediterranean staples. Their gyros are tiers above the otherwise ubiquitous ones being made in the corners of delis as an option to the hot food station or the sandwich counter. Fresh juicy and beautifully seasoned beef, topped of with fresh onion, french fries (!!), and homemade tzatziki sauce. Richly-marinated pork and chicken skewers and are likewise moist and flavorful and eat well with still warm toasted white or wheat pita corners.
And if you're eating with a friend, rounding out the meal with their homemade spanakopita, a traditional pie of spinach, feta cheese, onions, egg, wrapped in phyllo pastry, a tasty, hearty yet light vegetarian dish.
All the other items I've had off their menu (such as their classic Greek salad, a grilled eggplant dish called melitzanosalata, and even a terrific rice pudding) are, as well, way above the average Mediterranean dining experience. If you are too busy or too lazy—or even too hungover!—to "get yourself to the Greek", isn't it great to live in a city (or at least this neighborhood) where this particular Greek can come to you!
