A SERENDIPITOUS TURN OF EVENTS found me walking past Num Pang Sandwich Shop yesterday afternoon on my way to meet a friend. I have always wanted to try them out but somehow have not been able to get myself geographically or chronologically situated to avail myself of their very popular traditional and specialty banh mí sandwiches.
As my meeting with my friend turned into a lunch appointment as well, I was glad to be a hop skip and jump away from the Murray Hill location of a Num Pang shop, and was finally able to introduce both myself and my friend to some really delicious and expertly put together sandwiches.
I enjoyed the pulled Durok pork sandwich—tender, juicy pork, richly-seasoned, and nestled in a crunchy, airy roll among strings of pickled carrots, sliced, crispy cucumber, and fresh cilantro—while my friend quickly and earnestly devoured his coconut tiger shrimp sandwich. So impressed with his first ever Num Pang sandwich was he that he promptly proceeded to order another—this time the pork belly sandwich—which he likewise finished in good, enthusiastic fashion.
Like its sandwich, the shop, as with their other outposts throughout Manhattan, exhibits funky yet simple flair, personality, and flavor in its look and vibe. I now add this place to the list of new faves that I wish (with probable futility) were much closer to my home neighborhood. In the meantime, here's hoping I get farther out and about more.
