AS MY HOMETOWN OF New York City continues to be overrun by corporations and their business chains taking over the mom & pop shops that originally made this city great and and gave it its personality and character, I am ever more excited and grateful to, among my food travels, find who are genuinely trying to maintain and preserve the last few gasps of a New York of the people, their vibrant history, and long-held traditions.
Yet another new place is doing such a thing, to my good fortune, right here in YORKVILLE. The Sweet Shop has successfully and near completely revisited the glory days of the neighborhood candy store. Nostalgia-inducing in decor and layout, and appetite-whetting in its variety, The Sweet Shop offers a welcome returned to less cynical times and happier childhoods.
The selections of sweet treats represent a plethora of generations and countries, with candies wrapped in packaging reminiscent of their origins, and an assortment of familiar and popular candies from all over the globe. Also represented are candies from newer sweets purveyors (such as Roni~Sue's Chocolates), with many new confections made locally (such as from Brooklyn's Jomart Chocolates), and some generations of local family business (such as former Yorkville stale Elk Candy Company).
The abundant collection of sweets are collected from all over the world, made expressly for The Sweet Shop itself, or made in-house, including the ice creams that not legitimate throwback candy shop could be without.
And if that all isn't "throwback" enough, the shop is owned and run by a family man himself, Kelly Jaime, who also makes all the in-house goodies. His wife designed the look of the beautiful place, and his son works and learns by his side. How better to bring the sense of a family-oriented neighborhood back to Yorkville than with a family who resurrects one of the great pleasures of being a kid, having kids, and being a grownup kid. And seem to be having as much fun bringing this treasure to us as I am visiting it repeatedly. And that is a rare sweet treat indeed.
