A *Beach*-in’ Breakfast

I’ve been here in Barbados for just over nine months. I have had seaside dinners and lunches here and, for the first time, finally had a seaside breakfast, courtesy of Oistins’ Surfer’s Cafe.

The vibrantly colored (yet still humble-looking) exterior — which I’ve passed on numerous trips to and from the Oistins Fish Market or to the Massy Supermarket directly across the road — hides a well laid out, roomy, and comfy interior room, with two small tables situated just outside the rest of the physical space, perching diners like myself directly above Oistins Beach.

Getting there right after their 7am open time (and the universe looking out for me by raining hard only for the three minutes I was in the ZR van) I was happy to sit at one of those two outdoor tables, and from the menu chose to satisfy both me desire for a traditional breakfast dish and as well a typically Bajan dish by order French toast with fresh fruit and a side of salt fish-based delicacy called bulgol.

Both dishes were delicious — the French toast ideally airy and slightly crunch on its exterior, the fruit fresh and juicy, while the bright, spicy, slight acidity and saltiness of the bulgol a nice, welcomed compliment for those other tastebud receptors on my grateful palate.

A cool, strong iced cappuccino rounded out the breakfast experience, and the slight breeze, refreshing surf scent, calming ocean roars and mutters, and the sky’s visual majesty, all offered a full feast for my other senses as well.

The service was stellar, and the food came out noticeably quicker than at many restaurants I've visited here.

And the place boasts decent wifi as well, so for the increasing number of digital nomads moving to Barbados, Surfer’s Cafe can appeal appeal to people who are more to surf the internet than surf the Atlantic’s “rad” waves.
