I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO find myself in East Harlem (for an unfortunate reason, mind you) and decided to treat myself to a lunch that was a common favorite of mine growing up in Morningside Heights: the fried whiting sandwich.

Fried fish sandwiches are a staple in the South—many neighborhoods hosting Fish Fry Fridays ritualistically—and stores in major cities that sell fresh, raw fish (especially the cheaper yet still flavorful and flaky whiting and porgy varieties) as well as fry them freshly breaded to order are as common in more urban areas like Harlem than Starbucks are anywhere in or near Yorkville.

So, I allayed my hunger and nostalgia with a with a crispy, flaky fried whiting sandwich on soft wheat bread with hot sauce and tartar sauce, with a side of french fries. The fries didn't hold up as well on the trip home, but the fried fish sandwich was pretty near still perfect and yummy and "food comfortable" enough to now try to find more reason to travel to the Upper Upper East Side far more often.
