A Day in the Life of Hamburger Buns
| Hamburgers with Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapeños, Relish, Balsamic-Pickled Onions, Pineapple Mustard, and Bacon; with Steak Sauce, and Bacon | Breakfast Sandwich with Scrambled Egg, Pepper Jack Cheese, and Bacon | Sloppy Joes with Crispy Fried Onions
I WENT FOOD SHOPPING WITH a friend who was curious as to how exactly someone who lives by themselves shops for food and gets the most use out of them. I bought a bunch of items that I knew I can employ over a few meals, including a bag of hamburger buns I would show her could be used for all three meals of the day.
I also bought some sliced pepper jack cheese and, of course, some 80/20 ground beef. So for dinner, I showed off by making four burgers of two different types. Two were of a kind of steak burger prep, with steak sauce, raw and fried onions, and bacon. The other two had the addition of sweet and spicy elements, making a pineapple mustard from scratch, pickling raw onions in balsamic vinegar, and two slices of crispy bacon, and kicking the whole burger up with sweet relish and hot jalapeños. All four burgers sat very nicely on four toasted hamburger buns.
For breakfast I made us (yes, us) some breakfast sandwiches with scrambled eggs, more slices of the pepper jack, and more bacon, in between two more buns.
For lunch, I rendered some chopped bacon in the bottom of a small pot, browned some chopped onions and sliced garlic in the hot bacon fat, then tossed in the rest of the previous day's uncooked ground beef, adding worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, liquid smoke, tobasco sauce, and seasoning it with fresh-cracked pepper, salt, celery salt, cayenne pepper, chili powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
Over medium heat I cooked the raw beef completely through, then let it simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. I spooned the sloppy joe mix onto the last two nicely toasted buns, topping off with more crispy fried onions.
Quick, easy, yummy, convenient, all of these sandwiches served us happily and well. Thank you, bag of hamburger buns!
