ONE OF THE GREAT BENEFITS of living in Manhattan is that pretty much everywhere on this small yet populously crowded island is that you can live pretty much anywhere and have a local deli within shopping and delivery range.
There are as much a staple of this city as taxi cabs. And though—or maybe now because—there are SO many delis that offer 98% of the same things (coffee, eggs, toilet paper, cigarettes, canned goods, etc.), it is a welcome new trend that more than a few have started to specialize at least a portion of their offerings.
So, finally, the Korean owners of my local deli, located directly across the street from my apartment, have decided to humbly showcase the cuisine of their indigenous culture, featuring bibimbop(literraly translated as "mixed meal" and usually consisting of steamed rice, stewed seasoned beef, and julienned vegetables), bulgogi ("fire meat", a marinated barbecued beef served over steamed rice with vegetables), crispy spring rolls, and mandoo (steamed dumplings), which I've been a huge fan of since I had an excellent version at Mandoo Bar.
And since the owners and their 1st generation Korean chefs are making these vibrantly attractive and delicious dishes from scratch in the back kitchen, the quality and authenticity are off the charts, replete with great depths of layered flavors, a variety of enjoyable textures, and the complimenting temperatures.
Anyone who is a fan of these Korean staples—or homemade Asian food in general—and who lives within takeout/delivery range, should definitely spoil themsleves with a treat that's hard to find this good in most parts of Manhattan outside of Koreatown. You'll become more of a fan than you'd ever thought you'd be...!
